Blue Ginger & Micellar Water Shampoo — $5.99 (what!?)

Blue ginger isn’t the only plant in this. It also contains aloe and sea kelp, but the micellar water and the price are why it caught my eye in the first place. It’s $5.99 for the shampoo (same goes for the two conditioners).

I’ve seen micellar water in skin care many times over the years (what exactly is it?), but I’ve never seen it in a hair product before.

When you work the shampoo into your hair, cleansing oils encapsulated in water gently remove grit and grime without stripping your strands or irritating your scalp.

This is super gentle, and it doesn’t weigh my hair down, strip my color or encourage my dandruff. It’s for all hair types, too, from color treated to fine hair, thick hair, you name it. I can’t recommend it enough, and it’s such a good deal.

Blue Ginger Conditioner — $5.99

The matching Blue Ginger Conditioner is also made for all hair types. It doesn’t, however, contain micellar water, but it still de-tangles and de-frizz just fine. I like it…but I don’t love it like I love the other conditioner in this line…

The Herbal Essences bio:renew line also includes a White Grapefruit & Mosa Mint foam conditioner, Rosemary & Herbs, and a Cucumber & green Tea one. The foams are all designed for fine hair, but I think anyone who craves volume will like them.

My hair is nowhere near fine, but it can get heavy and look flat, especially when it’s long, which is why I still like to use conditioners that won’t weigh it down even more. Blue Ginger Foam doesn’t. हुदै हैन! The foam works fast, and it’s super fun to use. It soaks into your strands and rinses right out.

I have a stick in my shower room and use it in the morning, but I’m thinking about keeping an additional stick in my car because it’s kinda like deodorant or hand cream; it’s always helpful to have extra around. I just whip it out and slick it on! Life changing, especially in this hot weather, I tell ya.

A new water resistant mascara by urban Decay
Another warm weather must-have I rely on: water resistant mascara. For YEARS, my go-to was urban Decay Cannonball, which they discontinued a while back… Yes, I’m still hella salty about that, because why mess with a good thing?? Anyway, they replaced it with a water resistant version of their Perversion Mascara ($24). I’m absolutely on board with its dark black color, the anime ingenue curl and smudge-proof-ness (it was 99 degrees here yesterday, and there wasn’t a single smear underneath my eyes). Taking it off is also a cinch ’cause it slides ideal off with an oil-based makeup remover, so I don’t anxiety about my lashes breaking off. (Always a good thing.)

Knit Maxi dress by Loveappella ($68): Is it just me, or does this have an upscale muumuu vibe? maybe that’s why I like it. Again, there’s the question of color. Red or black? I’m leaning toward the red.

Dayla artificial leather backpack by Sole Society($59.95): The braid and the golden hardware raise this little backpack. looks like the best size, too.

Cover tank by Alo ($54): usually I’d never splurge this much for a tee shirt to exercise in, but this one gets great reviews, and I know I’d wear the black one all the time. incredibly cute wrap detail on the front!

The three colorful looks in this post have a couple things in common.

I wore them all to preschool drop-off in the last few days (the pink look at the top was from this morning!).

I did all of them using the $29 LORAC Neon Lights palette.

In the Neon Lights palette, that yellow is a lot more of a goldenrod, which I’m kind of disappointed by because I wish the palette had a lemon yellow… The goldenrood just isn’t yellow enough for me.

Still, I’ve been itching to wear a lot more color. I’ve just been trying to think of ways to feel comfortable doing it, because as fun as bright, intense glittery looks are, I feel a little crazy wearing that kind of makeup when all I’m doing is bringing coywolf to school or toddler ballet class.

The colorful looks here are my speed because, even though there’s a bright focal point in every one, there are still subtle-ish elements, like the foundation.

Something Sam said in that ’90s makeup video I pointed out the other day resonated with me. To paraphrase, she said that it’s not the things you pile on that make a look look cool. It’s what you leave out, so I generally went incredibly minimal on the base in all of these colorful looks.

I’ve also been very inspired by Katie Jane Hughes lately. She’s a makeup artist I follow on Instagram, and she is just SO DAMN GOOD. She’ll paint a delicate swish of sparkly green shadow or sketch a skinny slice of neon yellow liner, so you can tell she loves wearing color, but she also likes to go minimal with the base.

I’m a little obsessed with her at the moment!

And I’m also listening to an audio book called stunning Ruins, by Jess Walter, which is just OK… I’ve been trying to get through it for nearly a year now. The narrator is a dude, and while his voice is just fine when he reads the men’s parts, it gets artificially high-pitched whenever he reads a woman’s dialogue, so every single one of his lady characters sounds the same…like a man pretending to be someone’s grandma, and it wears on me.

I’ve stopped and started it how lots of times now? Ugh. but I’m taking another crack at it again… We’ll see how far I get.

Anyway, I’m reading two books at the same time, which feels rebellious to me for some reason. नि?

I had to improve the boldness of the blue and green by building up layers with a wet brush.

Because there’s enough color on my lids to rival a rainbow unicorn mane, I opted to keep the lips subtle with a peachy coral lipstick and gloss (MAC Fleur D’Coral Lipstick and painted lady Lipglass), and then topped things off with a soft wash of peach blush using a mix of MAC cheer Up and That’s Peachy glow Play Blush.

Even though this look isn’t exactly wearable, I think you must try it at least once with whichever brights you have on hand. There’s very little actual blending, and the hardest part, which wasn’t really that hard, was mapping out the placement of the blue eyeshadow — it’s difficult to figure out just how high up to go and how far to take it out, and I didn’t get the final idea of what made sense for my eye shape until I got to the very end and could make adjustments.

So, if you’re going to choose it, and I hope you do, know that it will probably look wonky-wonks until you get to the end…because then you can fully see whatever you need to tweak a lot more clearly.
