So I’m leaning toward a combination of all three — an Affable autumn Moody Monday makeup look for a Folksy fall — because it’s overcast and drizzling ideal now (it rained hard last night), and part of me absolutely wants to be sitting by a warm fire under a flannel blanket while sipping a mug of hot cocoa, while another part of me wants to be walking around outside in the rain dressed in black from head to toe with my headphones on while listening to happiness Division.

Basically, I’m feelin’ it.

There are three main concepts at work in this cozy/moody Monday makeup look. First, it features a warm matte reddish brown smoky eye. Second, the edges of the winged liner have been blurred. and third, the dark matte plum lip.

It’s a lot of look, for sure, but I think it all goes well together, especially if the weather where you are is anything like the weather is here now. It’s like it just turned full-on fall last night!

Skipping the winged liner or leaving out the falsies would tone it down. Or, you could not line your lower water line with the black liner, and just leave your lower water line bare.

Of course, to go the other way completely and improve the drama, you could go a lot more intense with the brows, or add a gloss on top of the plum lip, or use a gel or liquid liner, which would add even a lot more oomph (I just used a black eyeshadow applied with a wet brush). any of those tweaks would look incredibly cool.

I’ve talked about how much I love eyeshadow sticks, so I was already primed and ready to like these Maybelline Eye studio color Tattoo 24HR Concentrated Crayons.  

I was not, however, expecting to love them!

Here’s just a quick look in any way 10 of these exceptionally smooth and crazy pigmented eyeshadow sticks. Plus, they have major staying power. The packaging says up to 24 hours…but I didn’t test them for that long.  Suffice to say, they last a full workday with no fading at all. I am so pleased with these shadows that I won’t be disrespectful and say that they’re only “good for a drugstore brand.” They’re just awesome period, and the icing on the cake is that you can get them at Target for $6 each.

Since there are 10 shades in the line, I broke them down by color family.

Maybelline Eye studio color Tattoo 24HR Concentrated crayons in Pink Parfait, Lilac Lust and extravagant Lavender
As you can see, these are very sparkly, but still very pigmented.  I find Pink Parfait to be very similar to Pink Pearl by Boots No. 7, and Lilac Lust and extravagant Lavender seem a lot more special to me, especially among the world of eyeshadow sticks.  

Of this group, my favorite is Lilac Lust.

As for the gold and bronze shades…

The gold and bronze group are my heart and soul. I really love these shades, and with how easy these crayons are to use, I see them being staples in my makeup routine.

Plus, the bottoms on these crayons twist up, so you don’t even have to worry about finding a sharpener!  Of the golds and bronzes, Bronze Truffle is my favorite because it isn’t too cool toned or warm, so it’ll opt for pretty much any lipstick/blush combo.

Lastly, the smokey grays…

All of these, especially Charcoal Chrome, must be great for evening looks. When I swatch Grey Crystal alone, it looks like a bright silver, but next to Charcoal Chrome you can see a lot more of its blue tones.  

The big surprise here for me is Audacious Asphalt. I was absolutely expecting a black, or at least a dark gray, but it looks green to me. The formula is great and smooth and pigmented, though. It’s just that based on the name and the packaging, it isn’t what I expected.

It literally took me days to figure out that the image on the palette is a closed eye. maybe I was too preoccupied by the rose gold action happening inside.

I love this mix of colors. The colors are flashy enough for fun but flexible enough to incorporate into responsible life looks. There are pinks, warm and neutral browns, coppers, cranberries, bronzes and a bit o’ beige for balance. many of them are new colors, but I recognize some old faves, like matte beige Biarritz and dark brown Coconut Grove (oldie but goodie).

The big news: a new powder eyeshadow formula

Here’s the big thing, though: everything in the palette has a new reformulated powder formula. It’s expected to be much more pigmented than the current NARS shadow formula, but I’m not completely sold on how much much more pigmented they are yet.

Granted, they are pretty pigmented, as NARS shadows typically are, but they seem maybe just a tad much more pigmented than usual.

They do feel NARS soft and silky, though, and I easily get 12 hours of wear time with them.

Now, with a reformulation, you expect things to be better, and I expected there to be less fallout than typical with these, but the fallout is common of the current formula, which isn’t all bad, because I don’t get a ton of fallout from NARS shadows anyway. I have to do a bit of cleanup underneath my eyes and on my cheeks when I use this palette, as I finish with other NARS eyeshadows.

Another thing, this Coconut Grove, which is a workhorse dark matte chocolate brown that I also have as a single from the permanent line, is sooo different than the single version. The permanent version applies as a solid block of color on my skin, but this one looks sadly choppy.

I like that there’s a mix of mattes and shimmers.

That’s NARS Wild night on my lips.
The colors will get a lot of people excited, as they should. This is a bad-@ss blend of current colors in a palette you could have a lot of fun with.

The thought of a new formula will also get a lot of people excited, and on that, I can say that the new formula is essentially no worse than typical for NARS (with the exception of Coconut Grove).
